Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), but download managers show megabytes per second (MB/s). One byte is eight bits.
Divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s; 20 Mbps is about 2.5 MB/s. Real downloads are slightly slower because of protocol overhead.
| Plan | Maximum download rate | A 1 GB file takes about |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 1.25 MB/s | 14 minutes |
| 50 Mbps | 6.25 MB/s | 3 minutes |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | 1.5 minutes |
| 1,000 Mbps | 125 MB/s | 9 seconds |
See how your connection compares — it takes about 20 seconds.
